The Potluck of Weddings

I love weddings. They're just so goofy. I had the honor and the privilege to officiate a wedding for two friends of mine from high school. It ended up being a complete blast!

There are some thoughts that came across my mind as I was observing the wedding and the reception. Weddings are a truly great moment because it represents the bringing together of so many people. Ideally, if everyone you invite to your wedding comes, it means that you have everybody in once place that has ever meant anything to you. I think it's just not only a fascinating idea, but powerful as well. No wonder weddings are such joyous occasions, because there is literally quite a bit of love there. I don't think there are many other excuses in life where people will travel across the country to celebrate something. I do hope that when I get married, the people I love will be there.

Another thing I noticed during the reception was how weddings have the power to break down many different barriers and divisions. Normally during family functions, there are all kinds of things that separate people. There is age, ideologically beliefs, gender, etc. What's so great about a wedding is that not only are there family members, but also friends of the bride and groom. It means that you have this large potluck of all people. So what makes a wedding special is that during the reception, everyone interacts with one another because they are all at the same party. The barriers fall and everyone interacts with everyone else. It is a fascinating concept to me, and one that I wonder would look like in practice in everyday life.

While my wedding is a long way down the road, I'm excited to attend another wedding to see all of the awkward social interactions unfold.
