Why Leadership Blows
Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 1:00 AM
You know what I've decided? Leadership sucks.
Do you think that I'm being too abrasive? Try this on for size. One of the downfalls of being a leader is If you are a leader (a good one anyways), you are going to be real with other people. Because of this, people will always be examining everything that you do, scrutinizing every little thing that you do. Why? Because we want the people that lead us to be strong. We want to follow people that we feel safe with. We want safety and we feel like we have the liberty to criticize every little thing about a person so we can ensure that safety and stability.
Another reason leadership sucks is because it is usually more work than the payoff it receives. Leaders are usually doing a ton of behind that scenes work that nobody sees. Because nobody sees it, nobody usually appreciates it. It makes sense. How can I appreciate something if I don't know that something is happening? If a leader is a good leader, they won't go about flaunting their qualities, they just get the job done. Because a good leader seeks to get the job done and not to draw attention to themselves, the opportunity for praise and appreciation often gets overlooked.
There is also a tendency for people to abuse their leadership. This can be for a multitude of reasons. People may think that their leaders were put there for their very own reasons and can abuse them for all they are worth. Another reason may be that they think the leader above them is very comptetent and skilled and may think that they can handle anything. It also may be that they feel like they can trust their leader and can give them all of their burdens. Whatever the case is, the leader is more often than not overworked and nobody ever realizes it.
These are just a couple of quick thoughts on leadership. I realize this is all a negative view on everything, but sometimes being negative is a very cathartic experience. Why do you think so many people often criticize the generations above them? It's way easier to complain and moan than to do something about it. So here I am, taking the easy way out. We all have our days. This is mine.
